Studying abroad
We encourage our students to consider spending time abroad as part of their studies—whether in Europe or the rest of the world. Here you will find all the information you need, from the application process to the host institution.

Seven steps to moving abroad and back again
You can spend one or two semesters studying abroad at one of our partner universities —within Europe (ERASMUS+, SEMP) or worldwide (LMUexchange)—or at a university to which you submit a speculative application. LMU also supports you in finding an internship abroad. The IfKW accompanies you throughout your semester abroad, from the application process to your return.
Click through the step-by-step overview of the process below, or take a look at the details page here to find answers to any questions you may have.

Step 1 | Which path should I take to go abroad?

Step 2 | How the application process works?
There are a few things to keep in mind when applying: Which program do you want to apply for? What kind of application is required? Where can I find the online portal, and what does an application need to include? Mehr zu Schritt 2

Step 3 | Allocation of places by the IfKW
The IfKW's international coordination team reviews all complete applications and conducts the selection process; the letter of motivation is central to this process, but all submitted documents are taken into account in the evaluation. Mehr zu Schritt 3

Step 4 | Nomination and registration at the host university
After you have made your selection, the IfKW will nominate you at the partner university as an ambassador for LMU abroad. Depending on the university, nominations take place between March and May or August and October. This is followed by information and the application to the partner university. Mehr Infos zu Schritt 4

Step 5: Select courses and agree on a learning agreement
Once you have been accepted, you will need to draw up a learning agreement. This sets out the courses you plan to take and the credits you expect to earn, and is a prerequisite for receiving the ERASMUS+ scholarship. Adjustments can be made up to four weeks after the start of your studies. Make use of the advisory services available at an early stage. Mehr Infos zu Schritt 5

Step 6 | Let's go! Prepare for departure
Planning your semester abroad is your responsibility—from accommodation and visas to study planning. Check early on whether taking a leave of absence makes sense. Good preparation makes for a smooth start to your adventure abroad. Mehr Infos zu Schritt 6

Step 7 | Back at IfKW – have your credits counted.
As far as possible, all academic achievements from abroad should be recognized at LMU after your return. The basis for this is the (online) learning agreement. Recognition is granted after consultation with and review by your program coordinator(s). Mehr Infos zu Schritt 7
