VPN (Virtual Private Network)

VPN Access to the University Network

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows you to establish an encrypted connection to the university network from any location on the Internet, and from there, potentially to other Internet services. To access the university network, you need

  • a valid and active LMU ID
  • The eduVPN program as a VPN client.

What is a VPN good for?

  • Encrypted transmission of all data on the public part of the Internet (only in "Full Tunnel" mode), for example, when using a hotel Wi-Fi network.
  • Using a "virtual" IP address from the university's address range when accessing Internet services. This allows users to access restricted information (e.g., from the library) as if their computer were directly connected to the university network.
  • Access to internal services at LMU and IfKW that are not accessible from "outside."

Privacy and Issues with Individual Services

Before connecting, you can choose between "Split Tunnel (Default)" and "Full Tunnel" at the bottom. With Full Tunnel, all Internet requests pass through the VPN. This is useful if you want to browse the web without third parties (e.g., government agencies) being able to log all your requests. Full Tunnel is also required when accessing some IfKW services. With Split Tunnel, only requests to LMU services go through the VPN.

Information on VPN usage

Please note that you must use your user ID for the duration of your VPN use (even when working on your personal computer). You are therefore subject to the LMU Terms of Use for Information Processing Systems (you may not misuse your access or make it available to third parties).

IMPORTANT!

Please make sure that you do NOT connect to the LMU VPN via an existing VPN connection, e.g., via a VPN provided by your antivirus software. Doing so may result in your user account being blocked.
