Communication as Elective Subject

Communication studies can be chosen as an elective subject with up to three modules in the BA Business Administration and BA Business Education (PO 2024) programs. In addition, the IfKW participates in the Master's program in Environment and Society and the certificate program in Environmental Studies.

Overview of minor studies KW

The minor program in Communication Studies, comprising 60 ECTS credits for bachelor's degree programs, provides a solid foundation in communication studies and media research, with a particular focus on media. The minor program teaches students to use scientific methods to analyze problems, contexts, discourses, and narratives in the field of mass media and public communication.

PLEASE NOTE: All information on the following pages refers to the 2025 examination and study regulations and applies to students who begin their studies in the 2025/26 winter semester. The 60-ECTS minor program in Communication Studies will be reformed in the 2025/26 winter semester and is currently undergoing accreditation.

Course content

Theoretical and empirical approaches to communication studies as part of the social sciences are taught and practiced. Core aspects of the minor program include the topicality of the subjects covered and a look at historical and future aspects that determine and drive media change. Students gain fundamental insights into the research fields of communication studies, which are then deepened in specific areas of application.

Practical relevance & career prospects

Thanks to their practical skills, graduates are particularly well qualified for jobs in journalism, public relations and corporate communications, digital media, advertising and marketing, as well as media and market research.

Course of study
The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies as a minor comprises five semesters and 60 ECTS credits. The course content is organized thematically and structured in modules. A total of five compulsory and six elective modules out of 15 must be completed. These consist of one to three courses each.

Module overview
The bachelor's degree program in communication studies, worth 60 ECTS credits, has a modular structure and spans five semesters. It begins with the fundamentals of communication studies and methodology (quantitative and qualitative, followed by statistics and data analysis). Students choose various fields of research such as media structures, strategic communication, political communication, or media psychology. The program is supplemented by professional practice modules (journalism, public relations, advertising, media and market research, digital media) and two research projects in which theories and methods are applied in a practical manner and scientific work is deepened.

Examinations
In the bachelor's minor program in communication studies, which is worth 60 ECTS credits, ECTS credits are awarded for all exams taken during the course of study, reflecting the amount of work involved (1 ECTS = 30 hours of work, including preparation and follow-up). Registration for exams takes place via the LMU exam administration system; deadlines will be announced in good time.

Recognition of achievements
Examination results from previous studies can be recognized in accordance with § 21 of the examination and study regulations, up to a maximum of 30 ECTS credits. The application must be submitted by the end of the first semester after enrollment and handed in personally during the office hours of the Bachelor's minor in Communication Studies program coordinator.

Applicants should have a good general knowledge and an interest in recent developments, for example in the fields of media, politics, culture, and artificial intelligence, as well as a general knowledge of current affairs. An affinity for media and a fundamental interest in communication science research are also required. The 60-ECTS bachelor's minor program in communication studies can be combined with a variety of 120-ECTS major programs at LMU. Demand for places on the program is consistently high. The program has limited enrollment, so places are allocated on the basis of high school grades after applicants have submitted their applications.
