Social media: how do Instagram, Snapchat, and other platforms affect young people's self-perception?
How do adolescents present themselves on Instagram and Snapchat? Which self-presentation is approved or disapproved by peers, parents, and teachers? And how do their norms affect their identity development? These questions are at the heart of the "NoViS" research project.
Sub-Projects
Three sub-projects explore adolescents’ self-presentation (14-16 years):
- A qualitative network analysis with twenty ego-centered networks (adolescent, two friends, one parent, one teacher) (N=86),
- a CAPI survey (N=1002),
- and an experimental study (N=505).
Results
Results show that self-presentation is shaped by social and personal norms. Peers play a central role, with their norms like “be perfect” or “be authentic” influencing self-presentation. Parents affect through injunctive norms (What is appropriate?), while social media influencers shape through descriptive norms (What do others do?). Teachers’ influence on self-presentation is minimal. This negotiation of norms has a key impact on adolescents’ identity development.

Involved LMU research areas
The project includes several research projects within LMU. That's because it's great and very interdisciplinary.
