Research Interests:
Qualitative methods and theoretical-historical analysis • Media systems and media change in international comparison • Mediatization and media policy
The department of Prof. Dr. Michael Meyen at LMU Munich specializes in qualitative methods and theoretical-historical analysis. Research topics include media systems and media change in international comparison, media policy, journalism, PR, public sphere, internet, music, cinema, and sports, as well as the history of the institute and the discipline itself. The goal is to advance communication science beyond data analysis and mid-range theories in a critical and interdisciplinary manner.
The department emphasizes student involvement in research projects, with students contributing as interviewers, coders, idea generators, and sounding boards. These projects often serve as foundations for theses and doctoral dissertations.
The project comprises a systematic research program on the “how” of media use, i.e. the arrangements, styles and inner attitudes during use. We combine qualitative, quantitative and technical methods.
