Studied psychology and medicine at the University of Münster. After obtaining his doctorate in 1983, he worked as a project assistant and later as a university assistant at the University of Mainz. There, he habilitated in 1994 with a thesis on news reception. Since 1996, he has been a professor at the Institute for Communication Studies at the University of Munich. From 1998 to 2002, he was chairman of the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (DGPuK). From 1995 to 2004, he also headed the Ludwigshafen Media Institute, an institution for applied media research. From 2001 to 2021, he was dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Munich. His teaching and research interests lie in the areas of media use, media effects, and methods.
